It may be almost Halloween, but this year’s elections are scaring people more.  According to Dan Balz, writing for the Washington Post, voters are feeling both anger and fear about which way the election will go.   While that may have implications at the ballot box, the intense emotions can also take a toll on people’s health.

Prolonged anger can affect such things as blood pressure, digestion, and sleep — while prolonged fear and anxiety can lead to kidney trouble, depression, and sleep disturbance.   Both lead to stress over time, which can make permanent negative changes in your body.  None of these things are good for your health.

The good news is that there are ways to cope with the intensity of emotions — whether you are the one having them or just observing them in those around you,

Here are a few safe and natural ways to reduce the stress:

  • Stop listening to the news on TV or the radio (or your computer.)  The constant stimulation feeds your emotions — often deliberately.  Turn them off and get some peace and quiet.  You know.  Without all the noise.
  • Take a few minutes every day to simply be still.  Allow your body to rest and your mind to settle.  Even five minutes every day is better than nothing.  You can do this!  (Especially since you turned off the TV already — right?)
  • Use aromatherapy to calm yourself.  I personally recommend a product called Blue Eagle Invocation, which dispels negativity and uplifts the spirits.  It works immediately, and contains only botanical ingredients.
  • When you feel yourself starting to become angry or fearful, stop.  Take a few deep breaths before reacting.  Get control of yourself first, and then choose how you want to respond.  You can short-circuit even the most powerful emotions by just interrupting them.  Surprising — but effective.
  • Take flower essences.  You can purchase Rescue Remedy(R) in most health stores, or try Emergency Trauma Solution for times when you hear sudden bad news  — or just THINK the news you’re hearing is bad..
  • Take a relaxing bath using sea salts and botanical ingredients.   The sea salt draws toxins out of your skin while helping you to relax deeply.  I like Invocation Bath Salts for helping you to release tension and stress quickly.

Another thing you can do to help with the anger or fear about the elections is to realize that no one event is permanent; life goes on.  There are always opportunities to make things better from day to day — and that is energy better spent than on worry.

Regardless of how the elections turn out — don’t scare yourself silly.  Calm down and make the experience easier on your body by taking extra good care of yourself.  Try one or more of the suggestions listed here, and you will come out feeling much better no matter who wins.

I’d like to hear more ways that YOU use to get centered during all the turmoil around you, especially during this election season.  Go ahead — the comment button is right below.
